The week was punctuated by masterclasses from a legendary lineup of artists:
• Katherine Davis: World-renowned Blues artist, who taught the youth the vocal traditions, storytelling, and deep cultural history of the genre.
• Tony Carpenter: Master percussionist, who led hands-on workshops exploring the African roots of rhythm and drumming.
• Mike Wheeler, Charles Crane, & Guest Artists: Virtuoso guitarists and vocalists who brought the electric energy of Chicago Blues to life, teaching performance, instrumentation, and stage presence.
Current Feature: The Obama Presidential Center Residency
July 20 – July 24
This week, 35 exceptional youth are spending five intensive days fully immersed in culture, leadership, and horizon-expanding experiences at the Obama Presidential Center. This residency is designed to cultivate the whole child—blending artistic mastery with critical life-saving and leadership skills.
Over the course of this dynamic five-day immersion, our youth are participating in:
• The "I Am the Blues" Showcase: Campers are studying the evolution of American music and actively writing, rehearsing, and producing an original stage production entitled I Am the Blues.
• Holistic Life Skills & Safety: Youth are receiving essential, real-world training, including certified CPR instruction, financial literacy workshops to build future wealth, and gang awareness and violence prevention seminars.
• Visual Arts: Participants are discovering new avenues for emotional expression by learning the techniques of painting abstract artwork.
Through this landmark residency, the Blues Capital Foundation is equipping Chicago’s youth to take center stage—not just in the arts, but in their communities and their lives.

- Founded in 2024, the Blues Capital Foundation emerged with a vital mandate: to preserve the indelible legacy of Chicago Blues while leveraging its power to architect new opportunities for youth and urban communities. Built upon the very sonic foundation that shaped American history, the Foundation ensures that this profound art form remains a living, breathing catalyst for future generations.
Our roots are deeply anchored in the towering musical and cultural legacy of the legendary songwriter, producer, and champion of artists' rights, Willie Dixon. We honor the monumental influence that Chicago Blues has exerted on global culture—from birthing rock 'n' roll and transforming jazz and soul, to inspiring revolutionary music movements across Europe, Africa, and beyond. The Blues remains one of America’s greatest and most resilient cultural exports. The Blues Capital Foundation was created to protect that narrative and, most importantly, place it directly into the hands of young people who inherit its future.

The After-School Music Lab STEM Program
Our After-School Music Lab is an engaging, hands-on program where young people explore the science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics of music in a supportive and creative environment.
Through music education and STEM-based learning, participants develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Students learn to play instruments such as guitar, drums, and piano while exploring the science of sound, vibration, acoustics, rhythm, and technology.
Through hands-on activities such as building instruments, experimenting with sound, learning music production, and exploring audio technology, students gain practical experience that connects classroom learning to real-world applications. These experiences encourage curiosity, strengthen academic and creative skills, and help young people see themselves as artists, innovators, problem-solvers, and creators.
The program also supports youth development by providing mentorship, positive engagement, leadership opportunities, and a safe space for self-expression. Participants build confidence, develop discipline, learn teamwork, and discover their unique voices and talents.
By teaching music history and exploring the roots of Chicago Blues and American music, we empower young people to connect with the past, understand the present, and help create a more harmonious future. Our program teaches children about the rich cultural roots of American music while preparing them with the creative, technical, and life skills they need to grow and thrive.
Through music, STEM, mentorship, and youth development, the After-School Music Lab helps young people learn, create, connect, and imagine new possibilities.
