The mission of the Blues Capital Foundation is to preserve, celebrate, and advance the legacy of Chicago Blues through education, performance, mentorship, and community engagement. We cultivate young minds through the power of music—pouring hope, striking chords, and lifting lives.
Our Approach
The Blues is more than a genre; it is a foundation of American music and a profound vehicle for self-expression, resilience, and transformation. By anchoring our work in the rich heritage of Chicago Blues, the Blues Capital Foundation creates vital spaces where youth and communities can learn, create, and thrive.
Our initiatives seamlessly weave together history, performance, mentorship, and practical skill-building. Participants don’t simply study the Blues—they experience and understand its cultural significance, history, and enduring impact. We use music as a catalyst to inspire creativity, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for young people.
Education
We bring comprehensive music and cultural education directly into schools and community spaces through immersive camps, workshops, and after-school initiatives. Participants explore the rich history and global legacy of Chicago Blues while developing important skills in musicianship, creative performance, teamwork, and community leadership.
Our educational programs connect the history of the Blues with opportunities for young people to learn, create, and discover new interests and abilities.
Youth Development
We cultivate the next generation of leaders through structured mentorship, creative expression, and personal growth. Our programs empower young people to build confidence, discover their unique voices, and develop practical skills.
By connecting youth with positive role models, artists, educators, and mentors, we help create pathways to future academic, professional, and personal opportunities.
Youth Enrichment
We expand horizons and ignite potential by exposing young people to immersive cultural experiences, artistic innovation, and the broader creative economy.
Through masterclasses, performance opportunities, cultural experiences, and collaborative arts initiatives, we spark curiosity and help young people discover their talents. By connecting youth to Chicago’s vibrant arts and cultural landscape, we deepen their cultural pride, broaden their perspectives, and inspire them to dream beyond their immediate surroundings.
Access
We believe high-quality music education and creative opportunities should be accessible to everyone. The Blues Capital Foundation works to expand access for young people and underserved communities, connecting them with Chicago’s rich musical and cultural heritage.
Through partnerships with local artists, schools, community organizations, and mentors, we provide meaningful opportunities for young people to learn, create, perform, and explore new possibilities.
Our goal is to ensure that every young person, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to discover their talents, develop new skills, and participate in the arts.
Violence Prevention
We create safe, welcoming spaces across Chicago where young people can use music, creativity, and positive relationships to express themselves and build stronger connections within their communities.
By providing constructive activities, mentorship, artistic outlets, and positive pathways for self-expression, our programs offer alternatives during hours when young people may otherwise have limited opportunities for structured activities.
Through music, mentorship, and community engagement, we encourage a sense of belonging, positive conflict resolution, and stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
One change I made intentionally: I softened some of the Violence Prevention claims. Phrases such as “de-escalates tension” and “actively builds safer neighborhoods” can sound like claims of measured program outcomes. Unless BCF has data demonstrating those results, the revised wording is safer and more credible for a nonprofit website.

The Dr. Oladeinde Medical Scholarship alleviates the acute financial
burdens of medical school by providing vital housing and living
stipends to five exceptional medical students annually. By dismantling
financial barriers, this scholarship empowers future physicians from
historically underrepresented backgrounds to fully immerse
themselves in their rigorous training, master their clinical goals, and
prepare for high-impact careers in healthcare.

Summer Highlight: Cultural Immersion at Museum Shores
July 13 – July 17
Our campers kicked off an extraordinary week at the historic Museum Shores Yacht Club—the first African American yacht club in the state of Illinois. Standing on this landmark ground, our youth fully submerged themselves in the profound history of American music through the lens of the Blues.
The week was punctuated by masterclasses from a legendary lineup of artists:
- Katherine Davis: World-renowned Blues artist, who taught the youth the vocal traditions, storytelling, and deep cultural history of the genre.
- Tony Carpenter: Master percussionist, who led hands-on workshops exploring the African roots of rhythm and drumming.
- Mike Wheeler, Charles Crane, & Guest Artists: Virtuoso guitarists and vocalists who brought the electric energy of Chicago Blues to life, teaching performance, instrumentation, and stage presence.
Current Feature: The Obama Presidential Center Residency
July 20 – July 24
This week, 35 exceptional youth are spending five intensive days fully immersed in culture, leadership, and horizon-expanding experiences at the Obama Presidential Center. This residency is designed to cultivate the whole child—blending artistic mastery with critical life-saving and leadership skills.
Over the course of this dynamic five-day immersion, our youth are participating in:
- Masterclasses & Performance Prep: Refining vocal harmonies, stage presence, and instrumental arrangements for their grand showcase.
- Leadership & Empowerment Workshops: Engaging in interactive sessions that foster civic engagement, confidence, self-expression, and community leadership.
- Life Skills & First Aid / CPR Certification: Equipping campers with essential life-saving knowledge and practical skills for personal safety and wellness.
